5/5/2023: Training Course: Forest Carbon and other Agroforestry Ecosystem Services

The transition to a carbon-neutral society has been one of the central objectives worldwide, reflected in Portugal in strategic planning instruments, such as the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality 2050, which provides for the promotion of carbon sequestration through active forest management, promoting the valorization of the territory, the PNEC 2030 and the Climate Framework Law, which establishes objectives that must be pursued with a view to combating climate change and achieving ecological balance..

This transition requires actions to increase sequestration capacity, in order to enable compliance with the objective of limiting the increase in global average temperature to 1.5°C, established in the Paris Agreement, in line with the results of the latest reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Like this, Investing in natural-based solutions for carbon sequestration is crucial to achieving carbon neutrality, also contributing to the protection of biodiversity, regulation of natural cycles, landscape design and adaptation to climate change by increasing the resilience of the territory. To adopt methods for calculating sequestration at the forest level, it is important to acquire knowledge about models adjusted to national forest species.

Given this framework, and the growing need for credible methodologies, based on scientific knowledge and new instruments available to consultants and forest managers, it becomes urgent and necessary to carry out specialized training on the topic of methodologies to quantify carbon sequestration and other services of agroforestry ecosystems.
