2BFOREST/AFEDV at INVASIVE SPECIES WEEK 2023: Area-based action for ecosystem services

THE 2BFOREST and AFEDV hereby announce the invasive species control action that will take place during the “Week on Invasive Species”, in one of the first areas certified for ecosystem services in Portugal.

The area that will be subject to intervention is very sensitive as it is located in the Natura 2000 Network, in the Paiva River, with a high value for biodiversity and tourism development, in which the owner has committed to Theory of Change, namely in the control of invasive species, as a way of increasing the resilience of the territory.

This action was only possible thanks to the involvement and support of several Sponsors, who believed in the Project and the strategy of enhancing the forest area through carbon sequestration services, promoting biodiversity and promoting tourism.

The ES_SPONSOR Project allows companies and society to get involved in the valorization of the Portuguese forest, enabling investment in active management actions in conservation areas. These areas are crucial for the public services they provide: carbon sequestration, biodiversity promotion, and landscape quality. However, they lack the economic viability to carry out operations, critically increasing the risk of fire and biodiversity degradation due to the increase in invasive species.

Invasive species are one of the main threats to biodiversity globally (the 5th threat, according to IPBSE), in addition to promoting other significant impacts at an environmental and socioeconomic level. Within the scope of Sustainable Development Goals, the SDG 15.8 aims to implement measures to prevent the introduction and significantly reduce the impact of invasive alien species on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and to control or eradicate priority species.Citizens play a key role not only in preventing biological invasions but also in mitigating their impacts. However, this topic remains unknown to many citizens. In this context, SEI 2023 aims to contribute to increasing knowledge and awareness on this topic.
