FORESTS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Promoting the resilience of the Portuguese territory through the restoration of the forest ecosystem

Companies and citizens can support the restoration of certified forest areas in Portugal, aligning themselves with environmental and social responsibility policies. Learn more about the ES_SPONSOR Project and how you can contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

The ES_SPONSOR project aims to establish a bridge between landowners with areas certified for FSC ecosystem services, with ecological restoration measures, and society and companies that wish to join credible initiatives, with guaranteed technical support and sustainable practices in the management of forest areas.

Es_Sponsor's strategy is

Certify environmental services

The first FSC ecosystem services certification in Portugal made it possible to certify and quantify the environmental services of forests (FSC®C135716)

Market for Ecosystem Services

To establish a bridge between FSC ecosystem service producers, society, and the business world, with market alternatives that support compliance with the United Nations SDG and decarbonization strategies, promoting a win-win approach.

Value and communicate

Promote and communicate practices that maximize the resilience of forest ecosystems, ensuring sustainability for future generations.

Paiva Walkways

Conservation and Biodiversity Along the Paiva River

Along the Paiva River in Arouca, in the area of the famous Paiva Walkways, with over 100,000 visitors per year, we find Pereiro. It was the first area to receive ES_SPONSOR support. These forests are part of the Natura 2000 network and are integrated into the Arouca Geopark.

In 2016 it was destroyed by fire and in September 2024, too, but due to the support of ES_SPONSOR it was possible to mitigate the effect of the fires in the forest and prevented the fire from reaching the walkways.

ES_SPONSORS saved the trees!

Rare Species: alcar-do-gerês, arabeta-do-gerês, snapdragon-of-the-center, centaury-of-gralheira, ranunculus-do-vouga.

Marrazes Forest

Serving the well-being of the population

Mata de Marrazes is the largest forested area within the urban perimeter of the city of Leiria, functioning as an important green space in the urban environment as a recreational area for the population.

The forest was devastated by Cyclone Gong in 2013 and again by Hurricane Leslie in 2018, resulting in degraded forests. This degradation favored colonization by invasive alien species, making restoration of the area to native forest a priority.

Species of ecological interest: Leuzea longifolia, Juncus valvatu

Mount Cockroach

Luxury nature, name of Sales

In the Tejo Internacional National Park, this is a classified area due to its importance for the conservation of both native flora and fauna.

In an area with a pronounced Mediterranean climate that strongly characterizes the landscape, Portugal's main Quercus species—cork oak and holm oak—predominate. Since the end of the 20th century, these species and their associated ecosystems have been in decline in Portugal, with high mortality among mature trees and poor regeneration capacity. This situation, which is prevalent in this area, requires intervention with innovative restoration techniques.

Species of ecological interest: Iberian Imperial Eagle, Black Vulture; Bonelli's Eagle, Iberian Lynx.

Mount Lameira

Great tradition to this day

The fire that occurred in the Serra de Monchique in 2018 resulted in a burnt area of 26,884.755 hectares, and resulted in a tremendous negative impact on the economic and ecological value of the region. The consequences of the aforementioned fire devastated this area, resulting in the destruction of a large part of the forest, flora and fauna.

Species of ecological interest: Quercus canariensis; Klasea algarbiensis; Euphorbia paniculata subsp. Monchiquensis

Misery's Head

At Pico, misery is green.

Cabeço do Mizéria is a forested area of extraordinary natural heritage, where one can find unique flora and habitats such as the Juniperus Forest or the Macaronesian Laurel Forest, which must be protected from the spread of invasive species to native ecosystems.

Help us preserve and promote these ecosystems by valuing and recognizing their unique ecological worth.

Species of ecological interest:

Agrostis congestiflora; Arceuthobium azoricum Smilax azorica; Culcita macrocarpa Tolpis azorica; Erica azorica; Vaccinium cylindraceu; Azorean frangula; Ilex azorica; Juniperus brevifolia; Laurus azorica

I'm a sponsor! What are my benefits for joining this initiative?

ES_SPONSOR enables communication and marketing campaigns, based on a credible international system and brand:

Support for SE certification allows the development of communication campaigns based on projects with real and verified impact on the ground, and with authorization, they can use the FSC brand.

As mentioned above, marketing is supported by open, high-quality data that is verified, monitored, and audited by a transparent entity, lending credibility and transparency to the company's communications and avoiding the risk of greenwashing.

Support for projects integrated into ES_sponsor helps to comply with ESG criteria.

Sponsorship can be reported in the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) of the European Union (depending on the supported project and the company's activity), as a positive impact on the ESRS: Environment: E1- Climate Change; E3- Water and Marine Resources; E4- Biodiversity and Ecosystems; and Social: S3- Impact on Communities.

These sponsorships are aligned with other corporate reporting standards and benchmarks, such as SBTi, GHG Protocol, CDP, TNFD, and GRI. They may also contribute to decarbonization goals when combined with the Portuguese and European Voluntary Carbon Markets.
In this way, companies invest directly in the sustainability of their corporate activity.

With ES_Sponsor, both companies and citizens can support the restoration of certified forest areas in Portugal, aligning with environmental and social responsibility policies.
